Excess steering wheel play?

Check your tie rod ends, ball joints or king pins & link pins, steering coupler, and steering shaft bushings. If no play is found, and your steering gear has already been adjusted to VW's spec, it may be time for a replacement steering box.

Steering Box & Pitman Arm Differences:

Early steering boxes from 1949-1961 used a large diameter 28mm output shaft. These steering boxes are no longer made, and difficult to find.

Late steering boxes from 1962-77 used a small diameter 24mm output shaft. Aftermarket steering boxes will be this style.

If replacing a completely original early steering box, you may need to update your pitman arm as well.
