Steering Box for 1949-77 VW Beetle Ghia Squareback Thing 113415061C - Best Quality Available

 We now have two steering box versions available. This is the best quality option available on the market, which uses a full end cap support bushing, and uses the original TRW plans and machining process. Both available steering boxes are made in Brazil.

US AUTOMOTIVE Brazilian made steering box for 62-77 VW Type 1 Beetle, Karmann Ghia and Type 3. These are the only steering box with a bronze bushing on both ends of the steering shaft for longer reliability. Accepts late style 24mm small pitman arm and fits all VW Type 1 beams. If you are fitting this to a 1961 and earlier car, you will need a new 24mm pitman arm. Contact us for the correct arm for your application.

Tech Tip: The most common steering play culprits are loose pitman arm (bolt torque spec is 52 ft-lbs) and play in the steering coupler. Your steering coupler needs clean grooves and sharp edges to bite into the input shaft, then torqued to 22 ft-lbs. Steering box mount clamp bolts are also torqued to 22 ft-lbs. Your vehile should have zero play in tie rod ends, tight link pins/king pins or ball joints with no slop, and zero play at the wheel bearings.

Brand new steering boxes may need a final adjustment after an initial break-in of several hundred miles. They should be adjusted to snug (not tight!) on-center and will be looser towards full left and right lock - that is how all VW style steering gear boxes are made to operate.
